Sometimes we need a break, a rest, a few minutes to think and be alone. However you want to call it, we all need something. This is where habits or extracurricular activities are created. One of the habits that has been the hardest for me to adopt is self-care. Because, what does self-care really mean? Is it the act of getting weekly massages, hair cuts, nails and facials or could it simply be taking a bath?
One thing to notice about most activities is the cost. Self-care can cost a week's pay or it can cost zero, we get to decide what is right for us. But what if we could budget for an item that keeps producing more of the same product? For example, the best bath bomb I have ever used contains a handblown glass marble inside of significant size. I have used these marbles to bloom tulips, decorate a fish bowl and to bribe children to do chores. What I found recently is that these marbles have a monetary value and can be traded in for tangible products, or even more bath bombs containing marbles! What a concept.
I can indulge myself in what I like to call self-care by soaking in at least one bath a week and have a tangible memory of that moment. Not just a tangible memory but a beautiful piece of glass that is going to last longer than I can live. And now with the option to trade in for whatever items I want. I feel like a kid in an arcade with unlimited tickets. Why would I say unlimited? Well, because I am in control. I am an adult now. I get to choose what my self-care is. But I also get to enjoy that childhood feeling of looking at all the things I could potentially earn if I would adopt the habit of saving. It really is all about the habits we adopt in the times we are in need of something.
