We took a look at the DynaVap M 2020 edition, comparing it to our ELEV8R Glass Vehicle, and we found a lot of things to like about both units. The DynaVap M 2020 is a portable metal vaporizer shaped similarly to a baseball bat, with a "captive cap" that clicks to let you know when it has reached optimal vaporization temperature, and it requires an external heat source like a torch. The ELEV8R by Elev8 Glass Gallery is a comparable portable vaporizer made of quartz and borosilicate glass with a steel screen, or a glass screen in the case of the All-Glass version, and it also requires an external heat source like a torch. Both units performed their jobs admirably, with notable functional differences that put each into situational categories of their own.
The ELEV8R and the DynaVap M 2020 are both capable, affordable portable vaporizers that can be used to vape flower or concentrate. They are also both easy to clean, being entirely submergible in isopropyl alcohol. The DynaVap M 2020 and the ELEV8R are both designed to be used with butane torches, the DynaVap M 2020 having a uniquely designed cap which makes direct contact with the herb and is heated with the torch, and the ELEV8R having a uniquely designed quartz heating element which sits above your herb or concentrate without making direct contact with it. Beyond these points, there are some notable differences which set the ELEV8R and DynaVap M 2020 apart, though both are equally functional and would complement each other well in a collection.
The DynaVap M 2020 is a much smaller unit overall than the ELEV8R, and as such is a bit more portable though it holds significantly less flower with a bowl capacity of roughly 1/4 gram of ground flower compared to the ELEV8R which can hold 1 gram or more of ground flower. Because of its small size, the DynaVap M 2020 has the benefit of heating more quickly than the ELEV8R. The DynaVap M 2020 can be heated with tiny pocket torches that would never work on the ELEV8R, which adds to its portability and makes it a great pocket vaporizer, and because it's made of metal it should be very durable.
The DynaVap M 2020's characteristic feature is the temperature indicating cap which provides audible feedback to the user as it heats up and cools down. As you heat the DynaVap M 2020 a piece of metal inside the cap expands until it clicks; when you hear the click, it's time to vape. As the DynaVap M 2020 cools down, the metal inside the cap contracts and you'll eventually hear another click when the unit is cool enough to heat again. This is a cool feature that takes away the guesswork for beginners who aren't familiar with how hot their vaporizer should be before they try to hit it.
For cannabis connoisseurs and medical users, the ELEV8R's advantages over the DynaVap M 2020 are in its size, material construction, and versatility. Being made from separate pieces of glass, a quartz heater and a borosilicate wand, the ELEV8R can be used for much longer sessions without getting too hot to hold, and the glass will deliver the best flavor possible. The DynaVap M 2020 will heat up quite quickly, and after being heated a few times you will likely find that the DynaVap is simply to hot to keep using and you will have to let it cool down. This is not the case with the ELEV8R, most of the heat stays in the quartz heater and transfers to the borosilicate wand slowly. The ELEV8R's borosilicate wand provides a longer air pathway than with the DynaVap M 2020 which means that your vapor has more time to cool down before it reaches your throat and lungs, which is better for people with medical concerns. The ELEV8R's design also allows the user to easily stir their flower by shaking the wand, so you can evenly vaporize your flower without ruining your vape session with an accidental combustion. You cannot easily stir your flower in the DynaVap M 2020 because the cap gets too hot to touch, but since the DynaVap M 2020 holds such a small amount of flower this is less of an issue because you will be changing the flower more frequently.
The ELEV8R is a true convection vaporizer, which means that the heating element never makes direct contact with the material being vaporized, instead heating the air well before it reaches the flower or concentrate. This results in your flower or concentrate being heated evenly and predictably, ensuring that you'll never accidentally combust your dry herb. The ELEV8R's heating element is a closed tube of quartz glass with a standard 19mm male joint at one end that fits into a standalone wand, or a rig adapter which allows it be used on any rig. Both of these attachments are included in the standard ELEV8R kit. The DynaVap M 2020 is a convection/conduction vaporizer, so it vaporizes herb by both heating the air and by heating the herb with direct contact. Making direct contact with the herb significantly increases the risk of accidental combustion, so it's a good thing that the DynaVap M 2020 includes a temperature indicating cap to mitigate some of this risk though there is still plenty of potential for user error.
The ELEV8R also included a welcome component that was sadly missing from the standard DynaVap M 2020, a Flavor Disc for vaping concentrates. The Flavor Disc is a piece of puffed ceramic similar to lava rock, it absorbs concentrate as it melts and allows it be vaporized as hot air passes from the ELEV8R heater through the ceramic disc. The DynaVap M 2020 can potentially be used with concentrates as well, but you have to buy a separate attachment for it which is not included with the standard unit.
Overall, the DynaVap M 2020 is a great entry-level vaporizer at an entry level price. The ELEV8R is slightly more expensive, but the standard ELEV8R kit includes a bunch of extra attachments that allow it be used with flower, concentrate, as a standalone unit, and with any rig or water filter. If you've never vaped before, the DynaVap M 2020 would be a great way to learn about vaping and temperature, with the ELEV8R always being available as an affordable connoisseur-grade vaporizer when you're ready for something more versatile.
